Endangered Places

These Places Matter
Larimer County has a rich history with historic sites that date back tens of thousands of years. Some of these places have been recognized and added to the National or State Register of Historic Places. But without a local historic designation, those designations do little to protect those sites from development pressures. Only three municipalities in Larimer County currently have a local preservation ordinance that protects historically designated properties from demolition — Fort Collins, Loveland, and Berthoud.

Since 1988, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has maintained a list of Endangered Places throughout the United States. Since 1997, Colorado Preservation, Inc. has likewise kept a list of places throughout the state that are at risk of being lost. Now Historic Larimer County wants to generate its own list, specific just to the county, of places integral to our story, but that we are at risk of losing without some sort of intervention.

If you would like to be part of the committee that will be developing this list, please contact Ray Sumner using the contact form below.
